Puri, reverently known as Purushottama Kshetra, Srikshetra, or Nilachala, is one of the four supreme Char Dham pilgrimage destinations of Hinduism and the sacred coastal bastion of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. Set directly along the Bay of Bengal, the city pulses with a unique spiritual rhythm that has endured for nearly a millennium. Broad Grand Road (Bada Danda) connects the soaring 12th-century sanctum of Shree Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple, flanked by historic monastic maths, bustling sweetmeat and brass bazaars, sacred medieval step-tanks, and sculptors' ateliers.
When planning outings from Puri, visitors can easily alternate between intimate local town walks and sweeping regional journeys across Odisha's coastal plains, estuarine lagoons, and golden beaches:

Planning your day
Under centuries-old customary traditions strictly enforced by the temple administration and Chhattisa Nijog, Shree Jagannath Temple is open exclusively to practicing Hindus of Indian origin. Foreign nationals, non-Hindus, and Indian citizens of non-Hindu faiths are not permitted past the Lion Gate (Singhadwara). All visitors must observe modest attire (traditional Indian garments such as dhotis, kurtas, or sarees are strongly recommended; shorts and sleeveless tops are discouraged). Electronic gadgets, mobile phones, cameras, leather belts, shoes, and wallets must be deposited at police-managed cloakrooms at Singhadwara. Non-Hindu visitors can experience the temple's grandeur by viewing the soaring 65-metre stone vimana from the rooftop terrace of the nearby Raghunandan Library, watching the daily 5:30 PM sacred flag-changing ritual (Patitapavana Bana), and exploring Grand Road.
Puri Golden Beach and Swargadwar Beach offer distinctly different coastal atmospheres despite sharing the same coastline:
While geographically possible with an early start, attempting both in a single day is exhausting because they lie in opposite directions from Puri (Konark is 35 km east, while Satapada is 50 km southwest). Doing both requires roughly 170 km of driving, plus 3 hours at Konark and a 2-hour boat cruise at Satapada, leaving little time to appreciate either site. It is far more rewarding to split them: allocate one day to the Puri-Konark Marine Drive (including Balighai, Ramchandi, Chandrabhaga, and Konark), and another half-day or full day to Satapada Chilika Lake paired with Brahmagiri Alarnath Temple.
Puri provides convenient road access to three distinct sectors of Chilika Lake, each catering to different visitor interests:
