Steeped in more than a millennium of maritime romance, cosmopolitan commerce, and literary brilliance, Kozhikode (historically known to the English-speaking world as Calicut) is the cultural capital of northern Kerala's Malabar region. For centuries the celebrated seat of the Zamorins (Samoothiri Rajas), Calicut was immortalized by medieval Arab, Chinese, and European voyagers as the legendary "City of Spices" and recognized by UNESCO as India's first City of Literature.
When planning day trips and weekend excursions from Kozhikode, visitors can choose between two contrasting dimensions of experiences:
All four out-of-town destinations lie comfortably between 17 km and 62 km from central Kozhikode, well within the 200 km ceiling, making them easily manageable as single-day outings or weekend mountain getaways.

Kozhikodan Halwa is a traditional glossy, gelatinous confection made by slowly simmering refined wheat starch, pure cow ghee or coconut oil, sugar, and cashews over wood fires in massive copper cauldrons for hours. SM Street offers dozens of varieties, from classic black jaggery and golden ghee halwa to tender coconut, pistachio, and green chili.
Yes. Beypore is one of the only places in the world where giant wooden Arabian dhows (Urus) are handcrafted by master shipwrights completely without blueprints or CAD designs. Visitors can walk through active riverside boatyards along the Chaliyar River during daytime working hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) to watch craftsmen carving massive teak timbers.
Kappad Beach is the historic site where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed on May 20, 1498, after a pioneering voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, establishing the first direct all-sea route from Europe to India and initiating the modern era of European maritime trade in Asia. A stone monument on the beach commemorates the landing.
Calicut Beach is famous for Kallummakkaya Nirachathu (fresh green mussels stuffed with spiced rice dough and deep-fried), Uppilittathu (crunchy raw mango, gooseberry, and pineapple pickled in brine with bird's eye chilies), Kulukki Sarbath (shaken crushed-ice lemonade with basil seeds and green chili), and steaming Sulaimani spiced black tea.
