Udaipur, historically known as Rangamati, was the royal capital of the Manikya Kingdom for centuries before the court shifted to Agartala in the 19th century. Known across the Northeast as the "City of Lakes and Temples" (Sarobar Nagari), Udaipur offers an extraordinarily concentrated urban heritage core. Within 5 km of the town centre, visitors can explore one of Hinduism's 51 sacred Shakti Peethas (Tripura Sundari Temple at Matabari), feed critically endangered Bostami turtles at Kalyan Sagar, visit the 17th-century brick temple and palace ruins immortalized by Rabindranath Tagore at Bhubaneswari Temple, study royal Chala-style brick architecture at the Gunabati Group of Temples, stroll newly developed promenades around massive royal reservoirs (Jagannath Dighi, Bijoy Sagar / Mahadev Dighi, and Amar Sagar), and climb into canopy treehouses at Tepania Eco-Park. Beyond the town limits, smooth highways provide access to colossal rock-cut cliff sculptures along the Gomati River gorge at Chabimura ("Amazon of Tripura"), the floating royal water palace of Neermahal on Rudrasagar Lake, clouded leopard and primate habitats at Sepahijala, the wild bison herds of Trishna, the 8th-century Buddhist monastic ruins of Pilak, the 48-island archipelago of Dumboor Lake, the state capital Agartala, and the mountain rock carvings of Unakoti.

Planning your day
Chabimura is located roughly 30 km east of Udaipur. You drive 25 km along the well-surfaced highway to Amarpur town, then proceed 8 km south to the Devtamura boat launch on the Gomati River. There are no footpaths or roads to the carvings because they are carved on vertical cliffs rising directly out of the river; you must hire an authorized motor launch or country boat at the jetty (approximately ₹120 - ₹200 per seat or ₹1,200 for a private boat) for a scenic 1-to-1.5-hour cruise through the canyon.
Yes, exceptionally well. Depart Udaipur and drive 23 km northwest to Melaghar, where you take a 15-minute boat crossing across Rudrasagar Lake to explore Neermahal (allow 2 hours). By 1:00 PM, drive 22 km northeast to Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary to explore the Clouded Leopard National Park and botanical gardens in the afternoon, returning to Udaipur along NH8 (35 km) before nightfall. Note that Sepahijala is strictly closed on Fridays.
Yes, but it is an ambitious long-distance road trip. The one-way driving distance is approximately 185 km, requiring 4.5 to 5.5 hours each way via the NH8 highway through Teliamura, Ambassa, and Kumarghat. To complete the trip in one day, depart Udaipur by 5:30 AM, arrive at Unakoti by 10:30 AM, spend 3 hours exploring the rock carvings in the ravine, and start the return drive by 2:30 PM. Alternatively, take the morning train from Udaipur Railway Station to Kumarghat (approx. 3.5 hours) and hire a local taxi for the remaining 25 km.
Tuesdays, Saturdays, and lunar festival days (Amavasya and Purnima) draw intense devotee crowds to the Tripura Sundari Temple at Matabari. To experience calm darshan, unhurried turtle viewing at Kalyan Sagar, and peaceful strolls around the royal lakes, visit on a Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday morning between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM.
