Chilika & South Coast

Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) in Bhubaneswar, situated roughly 70 km north of Mangalajodi and 105 km north of Barkul, is the primary air entry. Balugaon Railway Station (BALU) is the closest railhead for Barkul (5 km), while Berhampur Railway Station (BAM) serves as the major mainline terminus for southern Chilika (Rambha, 50 km) and the beach town of Gopalpur-on-Sea (15 km).

Barkul and Rambha along the western shoreline provide OTDC accommodation, water sports, and direct boat access to Kalijai Island and scenic lagoons. Mangalajodi is the premier base for birdwatchers and nature photographers seeking dawn canoe outings into the marshlands. Gopalpur-on-Sea offers historic seaside hotels, ocean promenades, and convenient access to the hilltop Taratarini Temple. Satapada suits travelers targeting Irrawaddy dolphin boat cruises on the eastern lagoon channel.

Motorized passenger boats operated by OTDC and registered boatmen associations handle lake excursions from Barkul, Rambha, and Satapada. In the Mangalajodi bird sanctuary, motorized boats are strictly forbidden; quiet hand-poled wooden catamarans steered by local community guides are used to safeguard wetland avifauna. A vehicle ferry links Satapada on the eastern spit to Janhikuda on the mainland. Taxis and auto-rickshaws connect railway stations along the NH-16 corridor.

NH-16 serves as the primary multi-lane artery, running parallel to Chilika's western shore from Bhubaneswar south through Kalupara Ghat, Balugaon, Rambha, and Berhampur before branching off to Gopalpur-on-Sea (approx. 170 km total). Reaching Satapada requires a separate route: travel south from Bhubaneswar along NH-316 to Puri, then follow the 50 km coastal road southwest along the lagoon spit.

3 to 4 days allows visitors to cover both faces of the region: 1 to 2 days dedicated to birdwatching at Mangalajodi and island boat cruises from Barkul/Rambha, followed by 1 to 2 days relaxing at Gopalpur beach and ascending the Taratarini temple hill.
