The story of Chandrabhaga Beach
Stretching like a gleaming ribbon of golden powder along the tempestuous Bay of Bengal, Chandrabhaga Beach is one of India's most ecologically celebrated and culturally revered coastal destinations. Located in Puri District, Odisha, a mere 3 kilometres east of the iconic 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Konark Sun Temple, this pristine seaside stretch combines profound ancient mythological sanctity with cutting-edge 21st-century environmental stewardship.
Historically, Chandrabhaga marked the estuarine mouth where the sacred Chandrabhaga River merged into the ocean - the mythic site where, according to the Samba Purana, Lord Krishna's afflicted son Samba performed 12 years of severe penance to the Sun God Surya and was miraculously healed of leprosy. Today, while the river itself has largely receded into memory, the beach holds global renown as Asia’s first beach to be awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag certification, an honor bestowed by Denmark’s Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in recognition of pristine water quality, strict environmental management, safety protocols, and inclusive disabled accessibility.
Flanked by towering coastal stands of whispering Casuarina trees, crowned by a stately red-and-white 1967 marine lighthouse, and serving as the global stage for the spectacular International Sand Art Festival every December, Chandrabhaga Beach offers a serene, uncommercialized haven of majestic sunrises, brisk sea breezes, and captivating maritime heritage along Odisha's famed Golden Triangle corridor.

Look for the green safety flags placed by the Odisha Life Saving Society lifeguards. Never enter the water if red flags are posted, particularly during the monsoon or rough afternoon tides. Utilize the clean freshwater showers at the Blue Flag pavilion immediately after bathing to rinse off salt and fine mineral sand.

The Geographic Setting and Blue Flag Excellence
Chandrabhaga Beach occupies a prime position along the eastern coast of Odisha, situated right where the scenic Puri - Konark Marine Drive (NH-316A) reaches the coastal town of Konark. Unlike the heavily crowded, bustling urban beaches of Puri, Chandrabhaga retains an expansive, tranquil, and open natural character.
The transformation of Chandrabhaga into a world-class eco-destination gained international momentum when the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) selected it under its Beach Management Services (BEAMS) program. Meeting all 33 stringent criteria established by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Chandrabhaga was declared Asia's first pilot Blue Flag beach.
Today, visitors are welcomed by a host of world-class, eco-conscious public amenities:
- Paved Boardwalks & Disabled Ramps: Smooth wooden and stone boardwalks extend directly toward the shoreline, providing effortless wheelchair and stroller access over the dry sands.
- Eco-Friendly Bio-Toilets & Showers: Spotlessly maintained, solar-powered restroom blocks and open-air freshwater rinse showers allow swimmers to wash away sand and salt water comfortably.
- Purified Water Stations: Clean, continuous drinking water fountains powered by reverse osmosis filtration reduce single-use plastic waste across the beach.
- Shaded Gazebos & Loungers: Sustainable bamboo and thatch gazebos with eco-loungers provide comfortable shelter from midday coastal sunshine.
- Dedicated Lifeguard Watchtowers: Trained professional lifeguards equipped with rescue boards, lifebuoys, binoculars, and first aid response kits monitor the safe bathing zones continuously throughout daylight hours.

Mythological Origins and the Magha Saptami Pilgrimage
Long before modern environmental certification, Chandrabhaga was celebrated across India as a sanctified tirthakshetra. According to the ancient Samba Purana and Bhavishya Purana, Samba - the exceptionally handsome son of Lord Krishna and Queen Jambavati - mocked the celestial sage Narada. In retaliation, Narada tricked Samba into entering a bathing enclosure reserved for Krishna’s queens. Enraged by what appeared to be an unforgivable transgression, Krishna cursed Samba with debilitating leprosy (kushtha roga).
When the truth of Narada's deception was unveiled, a remorseful Krishna directed his son to seek solace from Lord Surya, the supreme solar deity and cosmic healer of physical maladies. Samba traveled thousands of leagues to the sacred Mitravana forest along the eastern seaboard of Kalinga. For 12 grueling years, Samba endured rigorous tapasya on the sandy banks of the sacred Chandrabhaga River where it met the ocean waves. Pleased by his unyielding austerity, Surya manifested in the sky on the seventh day of the waxing moon of the month of Magha (Magha Saptami), dispelling Samba’s leprosy with divine solar rays.
Taking his joyous purification dip in the river mouth, Samba uncovered a miraculous stone image of Surya seated atop a thousand-petaled lotus, carved by the celestial architect Viswakarma from sun dust. Samba consecrated this deity in a temple, laying the sacred spiritual foundation upon which King Narasimhadeva I would later construct the monumental Konark Sun Temple in the 13th century.
Every year on Magha Saptami (January or February), this ancient myth comes to life with breathtaking intensity. More than 200,000 pilgrims, ascetics, and sadhus converge upon Chandrabhaga Beach under the pitch-black night sky. At the exact moment the first glimmer of the morning sun pierces the ocean horizon, the entire gathering plunges into the sacred surf, chanting solar stotrams and offering oblations of holy water (Arghya) to Surya. Following the holy dip, pilgrims offer prayers at nearby shrines, eat consecrated food cooked in earthen pots, and participate in a festive week-long rural fair (Chandrabhaga Mela).
The Chandrabhaga Lighthouse
Standing prominently on an elevated sand dune just 500 metres inland from the shoreline is the Chandrabhaga Lighthouse. Commissioned in 1967/1968 by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, this 30-metre-tall circular masonry tower is painted in distinctive horizontal red and white bands. Operating a powerful optical beacon with a focal height 35 metres above sea level, it projects a double flashing white signal every 20 seconds, guiding maritime shipping through the navigational channels of the Bay of Bengal for up to 22 nautical miles.
The lighthouse features a visitor observation gallery at the top, accessible via an interior helical staircase. Confirm the current charge and what it includes with the operator or service provider. Visitor admission, vehicles, parking, activities and accommodation can have separate charges. The summit delivers an unparalleled vista: the endless turquoise curvature of the Bay of Bengal crashing against golden sands, the expansive emerald blanket of the Balukhand Casuarina sanctuary stretching for miles, and, on clear days, the colossal dark sandstone silhouette of the Konark Sun Temple standing majestically against the western horizon.
The International Sand Art Festival
Every year from December 1 to 5, Chandrabhaga Beach transforms into a breathtaking open-air sculpture gallery during the world-renowned International Sand Art Festival, organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha. Spearheaded by internationally celebrated sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik, the festival gathers dozens of national and international sand artists from countries including the United States, Russia, Mexico, Singapore, Japan, Spain, and South Africa.
Working tirelessly on individual sandy stalls facing the ocean, sculptors utilize nothing more than the beach's fine golden sand and sea water to create towering, intricate masterpieces. Sculptures depict global themes ranging from world peace, climate change, and endangered marine wildlife to intricate replicas of ancient Indian temple iconography. The sculptures are dramatically lit with multicolor spotlights in the evening, accompanied by classical music performances from the neighboring Konark Dance Festival.
