Known historically as Bezawada and celebrated as the commercial, cultural, and spiritual powerhouse of Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada is situated on the sacred banks of the Krishna River, encircled by the scenic spurs of the Eastern Ghats. Literally translating to "The Place of Victory" - commemorating both Goddess Durga's triumph over Mahishasura and Arjuna receiving the divine Pasupatastra on Indrakeeladri - the city is an extraordinarily vibrant hub where ancient rock-cut art, sacred river traditions, patriotic freedom struggle milestones, and lush delta agricultural prosperity converge.
Within the central urban fabric and its adjoining riverfront, visitors can seek blessings at the sacred hilltop sanctum of Kanaka Durga Temple, stroll the illuminated pedestrian walkway of the historic 1.2-km Prakasam Barrage, board river ferries from Punnami Ghat to the 133-acre eco-resort on Bhavani Island, explore ancient Satavahana limestone sculptures and the birthplace of the Indian National Flag at the modernized Bapu Museum, climb Gandhi Hill for 360-degree railfan and cityscape vistas, or cross the river to explore the 7th-century four-storey rock-cut monolithic Undavalli Caves with its colossal reclining Vishnu.
Beyond the city perimeter, well-engineered national highways radiate through the fertile agricultural heartland of coastal Andhra. Travelers can head northwest to Kondapalli (~24 km) to explore 14th-century Reddi hill fortress ruins and watch artisans craft GI-tagged wooden toys; journey south along NH 16 to Mangalagiri (~13 km) to witness Lord Narasimha drinking jaggery water (panakam) inside a dormant volcanic cave and shop for famous handloom sarees; drive west along the scenic Krishna riverbank to the ancient Satavahana capital of Amaravati (~38 km) to view the 2,200-year-old Mahastupa ruins and the 125-foot Dhyana Buddha; or embark on an easy day trip southeast to Machilipatnam and Manginapudi Beach (~75 km) to wade into gentle black-sand coastal waters and savor melt-in-the-mouth Bandhar Laddu.

Planning your day
Yes, effortlessly. Undavalli Caves and Mangalagiri are located just 9 km apart in Guntur district, directly across the Krishna River from Vijayawada. Visitors can leave Vijayawada at 8:30 AM, explore Undavalli Caves' four storeys and reclining Vishnu until 10:30 AM, drive 15 minutes south to Mangalagiri to witness the Panakala Swamy jaggery water offering by 11:30 AM, explore the foot temple's 153-foot Raja Gopuram, and enjoy traditional lunch and saree shopping before returning to Vijayawada by 2:30 PM.
Travelers should drive or take an auto-rickshaw to Punnami Ghat in Bhavanipuram (approx. 4 km from PNBS / Railway Station). The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) operates frequent motorboats and catamarans from the ghat directly to the island jetty every 15 to 20 minutes between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM for a nominal round-trip ferry fee (~₹100).
The dynamic multi-colored architectural LED lighting on Prakasam Barrage operates daily from 6:00 PM to 10:30 PM. The finest viewing vantage points are from the pedestrian sidewalk of the barrage itself, from Durga Ghat along Canal Road, or from riverfront restaurants overlooking the water.
The building (formerly Victoria Jubilee Museum) was the historic venue of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) session on March 31, 1921. It was here that freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya presented Mahatma Gandhi with the initial tricolor flag design. Gandhi approved the design with the addition of a white stripe and a spinning wheel (charkha), which became the official Swaraj Flag and the direct precursor of the Indian National Flag.
