Bhitarkanika & Cuttack

Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) in Bhubaneswar, situated roughly 30 km south of Cuttack and 140 km southwest of Bhitarkanika's Khola gate, is the principal air gateway. Cuttack Junction (CTC) is a major mainline railway junction offering extensive express connections across India. Bhadrak Railway Station (BHC, approx. 70 km northwest via Chandbali) serves as a northern alternative railhead.

Cuttack is the premier base for urban heritage, offering access to Barabati Fort, the Odisha State Maritime Museum, Cuttack Chandi temple, and silver filigree artisan workshops. Dangamal or Khola (near Rajnagar) provides eco-cottages and resorts immediately adjacent to the national park entrance, ideal for early morning mangrove boat safaris before midday heat. Gupti serves as a quiet alternative base closer to the southern creeks and Habalikhati beach.

In Cuttack, auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, and app-based taxis operate throughout the city. Inside Bhitarkanika National Park, road vehicle transit ends at the forest checkpoints; exploring the mangrove waterways is conducted exclusively via authorized motorized forest department boats or registered local tourist boats from Khola and Gupti jetties. Entry permits must be obtained at the forest range booking counters.

NH-16 runs directly through Cuttack, linking it south to Bhubaneswar (30 km) and north toward Kolkata. To reach Bhitarkanika from Cuttack, take SH-9A east past Kendrapara and Pattamundai to Rajnagar, continuing to Khola or Gupti gate (approx. 120 km). Alternatively, travelers coming from northern Odisha drive via Bhadrak to the river jetty at Chandbali (approx. 50 km from Bhadrak).

2 to 3 days provides an optimal split: 1 day touring Cuttack's medieval fort, maritime museum, and bustling street markets, followed by 1 to 2 days exploring the mangrove creek boat safaris and bird towers of Bhitarkanika.
