Ooty Coonoor

Coimbatore International Airport (CJB), situated roughly 85 km southeast of Ooty and 68 km southeast of Coonoor at the foot of the Nilgiris, is the primary air hub with extensive daily flights to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Singapore. Mettupalayam Railway Station (MTP, 50 km) is the broad-gauge railhead and departure terminus for the historic Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) toy train, while Coimbatore Junction (CBE) provides nationwide express train connections.

Ooty (Udhagamandalam, elev. 2,240 m) offers colonial-era heritage hotels, botanical gardens, and bustling markets around Charing Cross and Fern Hill, acting as the main base for Doddabetta Peak and Pykara Lake. Coonoor (1,850 m) provides a milder microclimate, heritage tea plantation bungalows in Upper Coonoor, and scenic proximity to Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose. Kotagiri (1,793 m) offers serene, uncrowded tea estate retreats surrounded by shola forests.

The UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway operates daily meter-gauge steam and diesel toy trains between Mettupalayam, Coonoor, and Ooty, offering an unforgettable mountain journey across dramatic stone viaducts. Regular TNSTC buses and private taxis ply constantly along the 19 km highway connecting Ooty and Coonoor. Within towns, local auto-rickshaws handle short hops, while fixed-rate tourist taxis handle circuit trips to Doddabetta and Pykara Lake.

From Coimbatore, approach via Mettupalayam, Burliar and Coonoor toward Ooty on the Nilgiri ghat corridor. From Bengaluru and Mysuru, the approach runs through the Bandipur-Mudumalai area before continuing toward Gudalur and Ooty. Plan around forest night-travel restrictions. The steep Kalhatty road has additional vehicle and traffic restrictions, so choose the Gudalur approach unless the relevant authorities confirm your vehicle can use Kalhatty. 3 to 4 days provides a delightful highland escape: 2 days in Ooty exploring the Government Botanical Garden, boating on Ooty Lake, summiting Doddabetta Peak (2,637 m), and visiting Pykara Lake and Falls; and 1 to 2 days based in Coonoor and Kotagiri, riding the UNESCO Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train, walking through Sim's Park, taking in the dramatic gorge views at Dolphin's Nose, and touring verdant tea estates.
