Coorg Chikmagalur

Mangaluru International Airport (IXE), situated roughly 140 km west of Madikeri and 150 km west of Chikkamagaluru, is the closest commercial airport with daily domestic and Gulf flights. Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR, approx. 250-260 km east) offers comprehensive global and domestic connections. Mysuru Junction (MYS, 120 km east) serves as the primary railhead for Coorg, while Hassan Junction (HAS, 40 km) and Chikkamagaluru (CMGR) connect the northern coffee hills.

Madikeri (elev. 1,150 m) provides central hill-town amenities, colonial heritage stays, and walking proximity to Raja's Seat and Madikeri Fort. Plantation belts around Kushalnagar, Siddapur, and Pollibetta in southern Coorg offer coffee estate homestays near Dubare Elephant Camp and the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe. In Chikkamagaluru, base in town (1,090 m) for bustling coffee markets or in the forested foothills of Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri for secluded mountain retreats.

Private chauffeur-driven taxis and rented self-drive vehicles are the most practical means of exploring winding estate roads and dispersed valley viewpoints. Auto-rickshaws handle short urban hops inside Madikeri and Chikkamagaluru towns. Ascending the rugged mountain switchbacks to Baba Budangiri and Mullayanagiri often requires hiring specialized 4WD local jeeps. Between Coorg and Chikkamagaluru (approx. 140 km, 3.5 to 4 hours), private cabs and KSRTC express buses connect through Hassan and Belur.

To reach Coorg from Bengaluru, drive southwest along NH-275 via the expressway to Mysuru, continuing through Hunsur and Kushalnagar to Madikeri (approx. 250 km, 5 hours). To reach Chikkamagaluru, follow NH-75 past Kunigal and Hassan, branching onto NH-73 through historic Belur (approx. 245 km, 4.5 hours). Connecting Coorg to Chikkamagaluru is a scenic country drive past lush paddy terraces and coffee tracts via SH-27.

4 to 5 days allows a leisurely journey through both coffee districts: 2 days in Coorg exploring Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat, Dubare Elephant Camp, and Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple) in Bylakuppe; 2 days in Chikkamagaluru summiting Karnataka's highest peak at Mullayanagiri (1,930 m), visiting Baba Budangiri, and touring coffee plantations; and 1 day exploring the Hoysala temple at Belur.
