Dramatically poised along a razor-sharp mountain ridge 1,130 metres above sea level, Aizawl is a captivating capital city of polite civic culture, multi-storey cliffside architecture, rich indigenous textiles, and pristine highland vistas. Within the city limits, travelers can explore the ancient material culture and warrior headdresses at the Mizoram State Museum, admire the monumental white marble spires of Solomon's Temple, take in panoramic skyline vistas from the soaring cliffs of Durtlang, browse vibrant hand-woven Puan skirts in the multi-tiered bustling alleys of Bara Bazar, and visit the romantic white marble memorial of KV Paradise. Venturing outside the city into the mist-draped highlands of Mizoram reveals breathtaking mountain terrain: the dramatic 1,548-metre precipice and traditional chieftain village at Reiek Tlang, the untouched virgin cloud forests of Hmuifang and undulating Scottish-style pastures of Sialsuk, the serene evergreen freshwater bowl of Tam Dil Lake, the magnificent 229-metre plunge of Vantawng Falls, and the handloom weaving workshops and walk-behind cascades of Thenzawl and Tuirihnau Falls.

Planning your day
Sunday is observed across Mizoram as a sacred Christian sabbath. Virtually all retail shops, government offices, commercial museums, and market stalls (including Bara Bazar, the State Museum, and KV Paradise) remain completely closed. While nature spots like Durtlang Viewpoint, Reiek Peak, and waterfalls remain accessible, visitors should plan shopping and museum touring for Monday through Saturday.
Vantawng Falls is located roughly 105 km south of central Aizawl near Thenzawl. The mountain drive along State Highway SH 1 takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours each way. A day trip is very feasible by departing Aizawl at 7:00 AM, which allows ample time to visit Thenzawl’s handloom workshops, Tuirihnau Falls, and Vantawng Falls, returning by 6:30 PM.
Yes. All domestic Indian tourists (except state government employees on duty) require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Mizoram. An e-ILP can be conveniently applied for and approved online prior to travel via the official state portal (ilp.mizoram.gov.in), or obtained upon arrival at Lengpui Airport or the Bairabi / Vairengte road checkposts.
Aizawl has an efficient fleet of yellow-and-white local Maruti Alto city taxis that operate on regulated point-to-point and shared rates. For out-of-town day trips (such as Reiek, Hmuifang, or Thenzawl), hiring a dedicated private taxi for the entire day with waiting time is the most convenient and comfortable mode of transport.
