Dramatically terraced across high forested mountain ridges 1,444 metres above sea level, Kohima is a storied capital city where heroic World War II history, indigenous Naga tribal heritage, and pristine alpine wilderness harmoniously unite. Within the immediate city perimeter, visitors can stand at the historic tennis court of Garrison Hill inside the pristine Kohima War Cemetery, explore the ceremonial log drums and sixteen tribes' regalia at the Nagaland State Museum, marvel at the indigenous Naga house-horns crowning the Catholic Cathedral on Aradura Hill, walk beneath the carved wooden clan gates of Kohima Village (Bara Basti - Asia's second largest village), and experience the fiery chillies and forest harvests of the local street markets. Surrounding mountain corridors lead seamlessly to world-renowned heritage and ecological marvels: the permanent Hornbill Festival grounds at Kisama, India's pioneering eco-village at Khonoma with its 700-year-old stone fortresses and terraced paddy fields, the mystical rolling dwarf bamboo knolls and endemic lilies of Dzukou Valley, the traditional thatched chalets of Tuophema, and the pristine trout streams and community homestays of Dzuleke.

Planning your day
Like all of Nagaland, Kohima strictly observes Sunday as a sacred Christian sabbath. Almost all commercial shops, market stalls (including Kohima Local Market), restaurants, and government museums (including the State Museum) remain completely closed. While outdoor natural sites like Dzukou Valley, the War Cemetery, and village lookouts remain physically accessible, visitors should plan shopping and commercial dining between Monday and Saturday.
The most popular route is the Viswema Trail. From central Kohima, drive 25 km south along NH 29 to Viswema village. A high-clearance 4x4 taxi takes you 8 km up a dirt track to the trailhead. From there, you climb a steep stone staircase for roughly 45 minutes to reach the ridge, followed by a flat, scenic 2-hour walk through dwarf bamboo to the Dzukou Rest House. Trekkers should arrange entry permits through the Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) checkpost at the trailhead.
Yes. All domestic Indian tourists visiting Nagaland must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873. The ILP can be easily obtained online in advance via the official state portal (ilp.nagaland.gov.in) or at Nagaland House offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Shillong. Foreign tourists are exempt from the Protected Area Permit (PAP) but must register at local police Foreigners Registration Offices (FRO) upon arrival.
The Hornbill Festival is held annually without exception from 1 to 10 December at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. This is the ultimate cultural festival in Northeast India, featuring dance, music, crafts, food, and traditional sports from all 16 major Naga tribes. Visitors must book hotel and transport arrangements in Kohima at least two to three months in advance due to massive international and domestic demand.
