Surrounded by the emerald mountain amphitheater of the Manipur Valley, Imphal is an extraordinary capital city where ancient Meitei imperial dynasties, unique living matriarchal institutions, World War II battlefields, and sacred Vaishnavite dance traditions converge. Within the compact urban perimeter, visitors can explore the sacred 2,000-year-old royal citadel of Kangla Fort, shop amidst 5,000 women traders at the historic Ima Keithel (Mother's Market), view the 54-foot royal dragon boat at the Manipur State Museum, pay solemn homage at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Imphal War Cemetery, and attend sublime classical Raas Leela performances under the golden domes of Shri Govindajee Temple. Venturing outside the city into the southern wetlands reveals the aquatic wonder of Loktak Lake with its circular floating phumdis, the world's only floating national park at Keibul Lamjao (sheltering the endangered dancing Sangai deer), the hallowed 1944 Indian National Army flag-hoisting site at Moirang, the ancient wheel-less pottery and eternal sacred fire of Andro, and the high misty alpine ridges of Shirui Kashong Peak in Ukhrul, home of the legendary Shirui Lily.

Planning your day
Loktak Lake (Sendra Island) is located approximately 48 km southwest of central Imphal. Shared Tata Winger passenger vans and buses operate continuously from Imphal’s Wahengbam Leikai bus stand to Moirang Bazar (taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes). From Moirang Bazar, local auto-rickshaws reach the Sendra Island causeway and boat jetty in just 10 minutes, making it very accessible for budget travelers.
The Sangai deer are crepuscular (most active during twilight hours) and retreat deep into dense tall reeds during midday. The optimal viewing windows from the Pabot Hill watchtower are during the first two hours after dawn (6:00 AM to 8:30 AM) and the last two hours before sunset (3:30 PM to 5:30 PM). Departing Imphal by 5:00 AM ensures arriving in time for the best morning sightings.
The Shirui Lily (Lilium mackliniae) blooms exclusively for a brief three-to-four-week window each year between mid-May and mid-June. The Government of Manipur hosts the official Shirui Lily Festival during this period. For clear skies, dry mountain trekking, and panoramic views without mud, October through February is the best season.
Yes. Domestic Indian tourists traveling to Manipur must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP), which can be easily obtained online prior to travel via the official state government portal (manipurilponline.mn.gov.in) or at arrival counters at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport and border checkposts. Foreign nationals are exempt from Protected Area Permits (PAP) for general tourism, but must register at local police checkposts upon arrival.
