Visakhapatnam - affectionately called Vizag - is uniquely configured among Indian coastal metropolises by the direct collision of the Eastern Ghats with the Bay of Bengal.
Visakhapatnam - affectionately called Vizag - is uniquely configured among Indian coastal metropolises by the direct collision of the Eastern Ghats with the Bay of Bengal. Within the city boundary, visitors can split their days between two contrasting coastal environments: the historic urban promenade of RK Beach with its iconic decommissioned naval museums, and the scenic northern Marine Drive leading to Blue Flag water sports at Rushikonda, ancient hilltop Buddhist monastic ruins, and the colonial Dutch waterfront of Bheemili.
For trips beyond the city limits, all featured destinations sit well within a supported 200 km one-way road radius from Visakhapatnam Junction. South and west across the fertile plains lie the archaeological caves of Bojjannakonda and the traditional country boat lotus wetlands of Kondakarla Ava (40 - 50 km). To the north and northwest, well-engineered ghat roads ascend through the Eastern Ghats into Alluri Sitharama Raju district, delivering travellers to the subterranean karstic chambers of Borra Caves (90 km), the cloud-inversion coffee viewpoints of Ananthagiri (85 km), and the temperate highland tribal valley of Araku (115 km). While lowland and mid-hill destinations are easy same-day outings, the high valleys of Araku and the chilly winter nights of Lambasingi (110 km) can be converted into relaxed overnight weekend getaways.

Planning your day
Rushikonda Beach is the only beach in the Visakhapatnam urban area recommended for swimming. It holds international Blue Flag certification, maintains full-time professional lifeguards, and has clearly marked swimming zones in a sheltered natural bay. RK Beach, Yarada Beach, and Tenneti Park have dangerous rip currents, abrupt underwater trenches, and submerged boulders where swimming is strictly prohibited.
While a rushed day trip is physically possible by leaving at 5:30 AM and driving 230 km round-trip through winding mountain ghats, it leaves insufficient time to appreciate the destinations. A single-day trip is best focused on Ananthagiri, Borra Caves, and Katiki Waterfalls (returning to Vizag by evening). If visiting Araku town (Tribal Museum, Padmapuram Gardens, and Chaparai), an overnight weekend stay in Araku is strongly recommended to avoid exhausting evening mountain driving.
The most scenic approach is to take the morning Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger or Vistadome tourist train from Visakhapatnam Junction to Borra Guhalu or Araku. The rail line traverses 58 mountain tunnels, crosses towering valley bridges, and clings to cliff edges. Travellers can explore Borra Caves upon disembarking, hire a taxi for sightseeing in Araku, and return to Visakhapatnam by road via the Ananthagiri ghat road.
The ideal period is between mid-December and mid-January. Nocturnal temperatures frequently drop below 5°C, and occasional cold waves bring temperatures down to 0°C to 2°C, causing early morning ground frost and dense fog that blankets the village until mid-morning. Travellers must carry heavy woollens and book accommodations well in advance.
