The story of INS Kursura Submarine & TU 142 Museum
Commanding the coastline of Rama Krishna Beach (RK Beach) along Visakhapatnam's famous Beach Road, the INS Kursura Submarine Museum & TU 142 Aircraft Museum complex is one of the most remarkable and inspiring public heritage installations in the world. Directly facing the crashing surf of the Bay of Bengal at an elevation of 5 metres above sea level, these two authentic, battle-tested military marvels sit directly across from each other on opposite sides of Beach Road. Operated by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) in close collaboration with the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) of the Indian Navy, the complex offers citizens and travelers an extraordinary opportunity to walk through the actual hulls and cockpits that guarded the sovereign maritime borders of India for decades.
INS Kursura (S20) is a legendary Soviet-built Kalvari-class (Project 641 / Foxtrot-class) diesel-electric attack submarine. Commissioned into the Indian Navy in December 1969, she played an instrumental role in maritime defense and patrol operations during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, serving the nation for over 31 years before being decommissioned in 2001. In an extraordinary engineering feat, the 91-metre-long, 2,000-ton submarine was winched out of the sea onto the sands of RK Beach, opening in August 2002 as the first submarine museum in South Asia and only the second of its kind in the entire world.
Directly across the boulevard stands the magnificent Tupolev Tu-142M (IN 312), the maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft known affectionately as the "Albatross" of Indian Naval Air Squadron 312 (INAS 312). Inducted in 1988, this aviation colossus flew over 30,000 accident-free hours hunting submarines and policing ocean lanes before retiring in 2017. Together, Kursura and the TU-142 provide an unparalleled, hands-on masterclass in naval warfare, submariner sacrifice, and aerospace engineering.

Regulations, Security & Accessibility
- Monday Maintenance Closure: Both INS Kursura and the TU-142 Museum are closed on Mondays for mechanical inspection, structural maintenance, and anti-corrosion painting due to the high-salinity maritime air.
- Physical Mobility & Footwear: The interior of INS Kursura requires stepping through circular, raised watertight bulkheads (roughly 60 cm in diameter) and climbing steep metal staircases. High heels, slippery leather shoes, or restrictive attire should be avoided. Comfortable sneakers or flat footwear are strongly recommended.
- Wheelchair Accessibility Limitation: Due to the authentic historic architecture of the submarine hull and aircraft fuselage, wheelchair access is not possible inside the vessels. However, the surrounding promenade, outdoor viewing plazas, landscaped gardens, and the ground-level aerospace museum hall at TU-142 are fully wheelchair accessible.
- Baggage & Cloakroom Policy: Large backpacks, suitcases, helmets, and umbrellas are not permitted inside the submarine or aircraft due to cramped passages. Secure cloakroom facilities are provided at the entrance gates for a nominal fee (₹10 to ₹20).

The Beach Road Maritime Gateway
Approaching the complex along Visakhapatnam's coastal boulevard, the juxtaposition of sea, sand, and heavy military engineering is breathtaking. On the seaward beach terrace rests the sleek black steel hull of INS Kursura, its iconic conning tower (sail) reaching 12 metres into the sky. Directly across the boulevard on the cityward promenade sits the colossal silver silhouette of the TU-142M, its swept-back 50-metre wingspan and towering tailfin dwarfing surrounding palm trees and streetlamps.

Visitors can touch the twin steering wheels used by the helmsmen to control diving planes and rudders, inspect the depth gauges calibrated in metres, and peer into the optics of the original search and attack periscopes.
- Living Conditions & The Galley (Compartment 4): A staggering demonstration of naval endurance. The galley - measuring barely 2 metres by 1.5 metres - was used by cooks to prepare four hot meals daily for 75 men under sweltering temperatures often exceeding 45°C. Life-sized manikins demonstrate off-duty sailors resting in stacked bunks, listening to sonar returns, and donning emergency breathing hoods.
- Engine & Propulsion Rooms (Compartments 5 & 6): The roar of three colossal Kolomna diesel engines generated 6,000 horsepower to recharge the massive battery banks that powered Kursura while submerged.
- The Submariner Guides: Perhaps the greatest asset of the Kursura museum is its guides - retired Indian Navy submariners who spent decades serving aboard Kalvari and Sindhughosh-class boats. Confirm the current charge and what it includes with the operator or service provider. Visitor admission, vehicles, parking, activities and accommodation can have separate charges.

- The Engines & Props: Outside the aircraft, visitors can stand directly underneath the monumental Kuznetsov NK-12MV engines. Each engine produces an astonishing 15,000 shaft horsepower, driving twin contra-rotating propellers where eight curved metal blades spin in opposite directions, creating the distinctive acoustic roar that could be heard for tens of miles across open water.
- Weapons & Simulator Exhibition: Adjacent to the plane, an air-conditioned exhibition hall displays real anti-submarine torpedoes, air-dropped sea mines, rocket-assisted depth bombs, and parachute-stabilized acoustic sonobuoys. A state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) Flight Simulator allows visitors to wear VR headsets and pilot a Tu-142 on an aerial submarine-hunting mission.

Be physically prepared for the unique layout of a submarine. To move between compartments inside INS Kursura, you must swing one leg, duck your head, and step through circular, steel watertight doors with high sills. Visitors with severe claustrophobia, acute knee problems, or recent spinal surgeries should consider whether they can comfortably negotiate these physical hurdles. The interior is well-ventilated with modern air-conditioning, but passage dimensions remain authentically narrow.

Take full advantage of the retired naval personnel stationed throughout the submarine. Do not hesitate to ask them questions: ask how they produced fresh drinking water from the sea, what food tasted like after 30 days submerged, how they slept with torpedoes beside their bunks, and how depth charges sounded against the hull. Their firsthand human stories bring the cold steel machinery to vivid, unforgettable life.
