Araku Valley

Visakhapatnam International Airport (VTZ), situated roughly 115 km southeast on the coastal plain, provides the primary air connection with daily flights to major Indian metros. Visakhapatnam Junction (VSKP) is the major rail terminus, from where the iconic Kothavalasa-Kirandul (KK Line) passenger train - equipped with glass-domed Vistadome coaches - departs daily into the Eastern Ghats, stopping at Borra Guhalu (BGHU) and Araku Railway Station (ARK).

Araku Valley town center (elev. 910 m) provides the primary accommodation base, featuring APTDC Haritha valley resorts, private guesthouses, and tree-top cottages in Padmapuram Gardens near the Tribal Museum. Ananthagiri Hills (1,100 m), situated 30 km before Araku, offers tranquil coffee estate retreats surrounded by mango orchards and waterfalls. Tyda, located near Borra Caves, offers forest eco-cottages at the Jungle Bells Nature Camp, ideal for birdwatchers and early cave visits.

The morning Vistadome train from Visakhapatnam is an iconic arrival option, winding through 58 mountain tunnels into the valley. Within Araku, local auto-rickshaws and tourist taxis connect town sights, Padmapuram Gardens, and Chaparai cascade. Visiting Katiki Waterfalls from the Borra Caves roadhead requires transferring onto local 4WD Mahindra jeeps to navigate a 7 km unpaved rocky forest track, followed by a short footpath scramble.

The Vizag-Araku Ghat Road (SH-9) spans roughly 115 km (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours), ascending from the plains via Pendurthi, Kothavalasa, and Bowdara. The route climbs through dense Eastern Ghats forest via Ananthagiri Ghat's scenic hairpin bends, passing dramatic lookouts like Galikonda View Point (the highest elevation along the highway) before descending gently into the lush Araku plateau.

2 to 3 days provides an ideal mountain getaway: 1 day taking the scenic Vistadome train to Borra Guhalu, marveling at the 150-million-year-old stalactites of Borra Caves, and off-roading to Katiki Waterfalls; 1 day touring the Araku Tribal Museum, Coffee Museum, Padmapuram Gardens, and sliding across the water-smoothed boulders of Chaparai cascade; and 1 day driving through coffee plantations at Ananthagiri and admiring views from Galikonda.
