The story of Kailasagiri
Rising majestically above the sparkling blue waters of the Bay of Bengal in the urban heart of Visakhapatnam District, Kailasagiri is Andhra Pradesh’s most iconic coastal hilltop park, pilgrimage landmark, and 360-degree panoramic viewpoint. Perched atop an isolated spur of the Eastern Ghats at an altitude of approximately 130 metres (426 feet) above mean sea level, the park commands an unobstructed, wraparound vantage point over the port city of Visakhapatnam. To the south, visitors can trace the curving crescent of Rama Krishna Beach; to the north, the golden shoreline extends past Tenneti Park toward the surf of Rushikonda Beach; to the west, the forested Eastern Ghats frame the bustling city skyline; and to the east, the vast, azure horizon of the Bay of Bengal stretches to infinity.
Developed and meticulously maintained across approximately 380 acres of manicured hilltop plateau by the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA), Kailasagiri was honored as the "Best Tourist Spot" by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2003. Combining spiritual reverence with family recreation, the hilltop is dominated by colossal 40-foot-tall white marble statues of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi, seated serenely in blessing upon an elevated lotus plinth. Whether ascending via an exhilarating glass-cabin passenger ropeway soaring over the sea cliffs or driving up the smoothly curved four-lane ghat road, Kailasagiri offers travelers of all ages an unforgettable blend of coastal beauty, lush gardens, and cool sea breezes.

(Elevation: 130m MSL)- The Passenger Ropeway (Cable Car): For the most dramatic arrival, board the cable car at the seaside base station located along Beach Road near Appughar. The 375-metre monocable aerial system features enclosed, brightly painted cabins fitted with panoramic glass windows. As the cabin smoothly lifts off the ground, you soar over the steep, jungle-covered sea cliffs, with the ocean waves breaking against the rocks directly below. The 3-minute ascent provides stunning aerial views of Beach Road and the coastline.
- The Scenic Ghat Road: Alternatively, private cars, tourist buses, and taxis can drive up the well-engineered, four-lane asphalt ghat road originating near Hanumanthawaka Junction. The 5-kilometre drive features gentle gradients, protective guardrails, and several roadside pull-outs where drivers can pause to admire the expanding urban vista.

- 10m Working Mechanism - Meditation & Shaded Lawns- The Shiva-Parvathi Monument: The visual and spiritual heart of Kailasagiri. Situated in the central plaza on an elevated lotus plinth, the imposing 40-foot-tall white statues depict Lord Shiva with his trident (Trishula) and damru, and Goddess Parvathi beside him in a benevolent posture. Behind the statues, an ornate decorative chariot and temple bell create a serene, devotional ambiance. In the evening, artistic spotlights bathe the white marble figures in a luminous celestial glow.
- The Circular Toy Train: Stationed near the upper ropeway terminal, a delightful narrow-gauge passenger toy train winds its way along a 2.5-kilometre track hugging the outer perimeter rim of the hill. As the train chugs gently along the cliffside, passengers are treated to a continuous, revolving panorama: first the deep blue ocean and crashing breakers, then the fishing harbour and container ships, followed by the urban sprawl of Siripuram and Dwaraka Nagar, and finally the green mountain ranges of Kambalakonda.
- Titanic View Point & Telescopic Decks: Near the southeastern cliff edge, a dramatic concrete viewing platform has been sculpted in the shape of a ship's prow, named the Titanic View Point. Leaning over the sturdy railings, visitors look directly down the 360-foot vertical drop to the coastal highway and rocky shoreline below. High-powered coin-operated optical telescopes allow viewers to zoom in on passing merchant vessels, coastal lighthouses, and distant marine birds.
- The Floral Clock & Shanti Ashram: Near the northern lawn stands the famous Floral Clock, measuring ten metres in diameter. Its functional clock hands move across a sloping circular dial carpeted with precision-trimmed colorful hedges and seasonal flowering plants. Nearby, the Shanti Ashram offers peaceful walking trails through shaded eucalyptus and neem groves, providing a quiet retreat for contemplation and relaxation.

Choosing Between the Ropeway and the Ghat Road
Decide in advance how you wish to ascend.Explore detailsClose details
Decide in advance how you wish to ascend. If you want the full tourist adventure and aerial photographs of the crashing ocean surf, leave your car or take an auto-rickshaw to the Beach Road base station and ride the ropeway up. However, if you are traveling with elderly relatives, infants with strollers, or during stormy monsoon winds (when the cable car may be temporarily grounded), driving directly up the smooth four-lane ghat road to the hilltop parking plaza is far more convenient and eliminates ropeway ticket queues.
