Agra, the imperial heart of Mughal India during the 16th and 17th centuries, presents an embarrassment of architectural riches, vibrant street life, and nearby wilderness that extends far beyond a fleeting glimpse of the Taj Mahal. To experience Agra rewardingly, visitors should balance world-famous marble and sandstone monuments with quiet riverbank gardens, ancient markets, and dramatic out-of-town excursions.
Crucially, planning your visit requires knowing the weekly closures:

Planning your day
Because the Taj Mahal is strictly closed to tourists on Fridays, plan your Friday around Agra’s other open masterworks: visit the grand imperial courtyards of Agra Fort in the morning, tour the exquisite white-marble Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj) after lunch, and head to Mehtab Bagh directly across the river at 4:30 PM. From Mehtab Bagh, you will enjoy unobstructed, panoramic sunset views of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna without crowds.
Under Supreme Court environmental rulings, no petrol or diesel vehicles may operate within 500 metres of the monument. All taxis, tour buses, and private cars park at the official outer lots - Shilpgram (for the East Gate) or Amrood Ka Tila (for the West Gate). From these plazas, official electric golf carts and e-rickshaws ferry visitors to the security checkpoints for approximately ₹10 to ₹20, or you can walk the 10-minute pedestrian path.
While physically possible, it is not recommended because they lie along different highway corridors (Fatehpur Sikri is 37 km west on NH 21, while Mathura is 56 km northwest on NH 19). Combining them requires backtracking through Agra city traffic. Pair Fatehpur Sikri with Keoladeo Bharatpur instead, and dedicate a separate day to Mathura and Vrindavan.
Yes, exceptionally so. The cycle-rickshaw pullers at Keoladeo are trained and licensed by the Rajasthan Forest Department. Most carry binoculars, field guides, and notebooks, and possess an extraordinary ability to locate and identify rare birds by sight and call. Fixed government hourly rates ensure transparent pricing.
The National Chambal Sanctuary and all boat safaris are strictly closed during the monsoon season from July to September (and frequently through early October) to protect breeding crocodiles, accommodate heavy river currents, and prevent flood hazards. The optimal window for boat safaris is November to March.
