Set like an oasis amidst the rugged, semi-arid plains of Western Gujarat, Bhuj is the historic, administrative, and cultural capital of Kutch (Kachchh) - India’s largest district. The city is a living tapestry of royal Jadeja dynasties, resilient desert communities, and world-renowned artisanal guilds. Within Bhuj itself, travelers can step into the eccentric 18th-century Palace of Mirrors at Aina Mahal (crafted by a sailor shipwrecked in Europe), climb the 45-metre Italian Gothic clock tower of Prag Mahal, explore Gujarat’s oldest museum at Kutch Museum, or stroll the stone banks of the 450-year-old Hamirsar Lake where pink flamingos winter in the shallows. On the eastern ridge of the city, the newly opened Smritivan Earthquake Memorial and Museum - selected for the prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles in 2024 - offers a deeply moving, world-class tribute to human resilience and recovery following the catastrophic 2001 earthquake.
As an out-of-town base, Bhuj is unparalleled: modern multi-lane state and national highways radiate outward across the peninsula to connect extraordinary desert landscapes, living craft villages, coastal maritime ports, and Bronze Age archaeology. Textile lovers can watch pit-loom weavers in Bhujodi (~9 km) or discover rare castor-oil Rogan art in Nirona (~40 km). Along the southern coastline, the royal port of Mandvi (~58 km) preserves the 1929 red-sandstone Vijay Vilas Palace and 400-year-old handcrafted wooden dhow shipyards. To the north, the blinding white salt crust of the Great Rann of Kutch at Dhordo (~82 km) hosts the vibrant cultural extravaganza of Rann Utsav. And via the spectacular new "Road to Heaven" highway (NH 754K) cutting straight through the salt desert, travelers can now reach the 5,000-year-old UNESCO World Heritage Harappan stone metropolis of Dholavira (~136 km) in under three hours.

Planning your day
Yes. Because the White Rann lies in a sensitive frontier territory near the international border, all domestic and international travelers must obtain a White Rann Permit. You can easily generate and pay for the permit online in advance at rannpermit.gujarat.gov.in (₹100 per adult) or purchase it physically at the Bhirandiyara Police Checkpost on the highway from Bhuj. Carry a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar card, voter card, driving license, or passport).
Historically, reaching Dholavira from Bhuj required an arduous 215 - 220 km detour via Bhachau and Rapar, taking over 4.5 to 5 hours. In 2023, the government inaugurated the new National Highway 754K directly connecting Khavda to Khadir Bet across the Great Rann. Known as the "Road to Heaven," this elevated highway cuts straight across 30 kilometres of white salt desert, reducing the one-way distance to just 136 km and cutting travel time to 2.5 hours.
A full day (or a relaxed 6-hour excursion) is ideal for Mandvi. The 58-km drive from Bhuj takes just over an hour. This allows you to explore the royal halls and terrace of Vijay Vilas Palace (1.5 to 2 hours), walk through the 400-year-old handcrafted wooden dhow shipyards on the river, visit the Shyamji Krishna Varma memorial, and enjoy a breezy sunset and camel ride on Mandvi Beach.
