The story of City Palace Udaipur
Crowning a dramatic granite ridge along the shimmering eastern shoreline of Lake Pichola in Udaipur District, Southern Rajasthan, City Palace Udaipur stands as the monumental architectural heart and living soul of the historic Kingdom of Mewar. Founded in 1559 CE by Maharana Udai Singh II - the father of India's celebrated warrior-king Maharana Pratap - the complex was conceived when the Sisodia Rajput rulers relocated their capital from the vulnerable, war-ravaged fortress of Chittorgarh to the natural mountain basin of the Girwa valley in the Aravalli Hills.
Stretching an astonishing 244 metres (800 feet) in length and soaring over 30 metres (100 feet) above the water, City Palace is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. What makes this colossal stone citadel extraordinary is its architectural unity: although constructed over a span of nearly 400 years by 22 successive Maharanas, each monarch respected the aesthetic vision of his predecessors.
The resulting monument is an intoxicating synthesis of Mewari Rajput defensive might, refined Mughal arches, European stained glass, and Chinese ceramic inlays. Within its creamy marble and granite facade lie palatial wonders celebrated worldwide: the dazzling Mor Chowk with its three-dimensional glass peacock mosaics, the elevated gardens of Badi Mahal, the royal courtyards of the Zenana Mahal, and the world’s largest private collection of crystal furniture in the Crystal Gallery.

For cultural connoisseurs, photographers, and history enthusiasts, City Palace Udaipur is an essential royal masterpiece:
- The Crown Jewel of Mewar Royalty: City Palace is one of the few monumental Indian palaces that remains an active living seat of an ancient royal dynasty. While the titular Maharana resides in the private Shambhu Niwas Palace wing, the public City Palace Museum (managed by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation - MMCF) showcases centuries of royal armor, miniature paintings, silver furniture, and coronation artifacts.
- The World-Famous Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard): Added in the 17th century and perfected under Maharana Sajjan Singh in the 19th century, Mor Chowk is an astonishing triumph of relief glass mosaic art. Three lifelike dancing peacocks, relief-carved and inlaid with over 5,000 individual pieces of shimmering blue, green, and gold Belgian glass foil, glisten in the courtyard light, capturing the joy of the monsoon rains.
- Badi Mahal (The Garden Palace on a Rock): Although appearing to sit on the fourth floor of the palace, Badi Mahal is built directly atop a natural 27-metre-high granite rock spur that formed the highest point of the hill. It features an open-air hanging garden shaded by mature neem and peepal trees, enclosed by 104 intricately carved white marble pillars and arched pavilions.
- The World's Largest Crystal Collection (Crystal Gallery): Housed in the upper galleries of Fateh Prakash Palace, this legendary private collection was custom-ordered in 1877 from F&C Osler of London by Maharana Sajjan Singh. It showcases unique crystal chairs, writing tables, sofa sets, decanters, and the world's only known crystal four-poster bed.
- Breathtaking Panoramas Over Lake Pichola: From the high oriel windows (jharokhas) and rooftop terraces of the palace, visitors enjoy spellbinding aerial views of Lake Pichola, the whitewashed Lake Palace (Jag Niwas) floating on the water, Jagmandir Island, and the sunset-draped Aravalli hills crowned by the Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh).
- The Evening Sound and Light Show (The Legacy of Mewar): Every evening, the vast cobblestone courtyard of Manak Chowk hosts an evocative Sound and Light show that narrates the 1,500-year history of the Sisodia dynasty, the defense of Chittorgarh, the founding of Udaipur, and the heroic resistance of Maharana Pratap.

Exploring City Palace Udaipur is an extensive, multi-hour journey through a succession of soaring gateways, public plazas, and labyrinthine palatial chambers designed to confuse medieval invaders.
The Majestic Royal Gateways
The approach to City Palace from the narrow bazaars of old Udaipur leads through Badi Pol (Great Gate, 1600 CE). Passing through Badi Pol brings you onto the wide approach road leading to Tripolia Pol (Triple Gate), constructed in 1713 by Maharana Sangram Singh II.
Above the central archway of Tripolia, seven carved stone archways mark the historic site of tuladan - the ancient ceremony where the Maharana was weighed on his birthday against gold, silver, and grains, which were subsequently distributed to the impoverished citizens of Mewar.
Beyond Tripolia lies Manak Chowk, a vast cobblestone parade ground. Historically, Manak Chowk was where royal elephant combats were held to test the bravery of war elephants, where cavalry regiments assembled for inspection, and where citizens gathered for royal proclamations. Today, Manak Chowk serves as the entrance plaza, housing ticket booths, audio guide counters, and open-air seating for the evening light show.
Entering the City Palace Museum (Mardana Mahal)
Entering through Toran Pol, visitors step into the Mardana Mahal (King's Palace). The palace was intentionally designed with narrow corridors, sharp 90-degree staircases, and low doors to prevent surprise enemy charges and force invaders to enter one by one with lowered heads.
Key highlights of the museum circuit include:
- Rajya Sabha & Gauri Chowk: Historic courtyards where the Maharana held informal state councils and celebrated spring Gauri festivals.
- Dilkhush Mahal (Palace of Joy): An intimate 17th-century royal apartment decorated with mirrored walls, red and gold frescoes, and European floral tiles.
- Kanch ki Burj: A dazzling chamber completely encrusted in mirror mosaics and red and green glass panels.
- Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace): Featuring mirrored alcoves and vibrant stained-glass windows that cast jewel-toned light onto the floor.
- Surya Chopar: A revered royal shrine housing a colossal, sunburst-faced golden emblem of Surya (the Sun God), the divine ancestor of the Sisodia Solar Dynasty. Every morning, the Maharana would offer prayers here before breaking his fast.
Mor Chowk and the Royal Zenana
From the Mardana Mahal, the visitor trail leads into Mor Chowk (Peacock Courtyard). Enclosed by three-tiered balconies, the lower walls feature three magnificent glass-mosaic peacocks in high relief, displaying their iridescent plumage in celebratory dance.
Adjoining Mor Chowk is the Zenana Mahal (Queen's Palace), built in the early 1600s. Its massive central courtyard - Laxmi Vilas Chowk - is shaded by fragrant champa trees and centered around a marble fountain. The surrounding arcaded galleries now house the Royal Silver Gallery, showcasing solid silver royal palanquins, the world-famous Silver Mandap (wedding canopy), ceremonial howdahs, and solid silver ritual vessels used during state banquets.
The Crystal Gallery & Durbar Hall
For travelers who purchase the optional Crystal Gallery ticket, a visit to Fateh Prakash Palace is an absolute highlight. The grand Durbar Hall is one of India's most imposing royal banqueting rooms, featuring seven massive Belgian crystal chandeliers and historic portraiture of the Maharanas.
Above the hall, the Crystal Gallery displays the astonishing F&C Osler 1877 collection. Stored in crates for over a century following Maharana Sajjan Singh's untimely death at age 25, the collection was meticulously restored and displayed to the public in 1994, showcasing an unprecedented array of crystal tableware, thrones, sofas, and the famed crystal bed.

Seasonal Breakdown
- Winter (October to March) - Prime Touring Season: Winter is the most comfortable and rewarding season to visit Udaipur. Days are sunny, dry, and mild, with temperatures averaging between 14°C and 27°C. The dry desert air and cool lake breezes make walking through the multi-storey palace, open courtyards, and lakefront promenades an absolute joy. Nights are crisp and cool (10°C to 14°C).
- Monsoon (July to September) - The Romantic Green Season: Known as the most romantic time of year in Udaipur. The southwest monsoon refills Lake Pichola, Fatehsagar, and Swaroop Sagar. The surrounding Aravalli hills turn lush and emerald-green, rain showers wash the palace stonework clean, and mist hangs over the lake, creating unforgettable photography backdrops. Daytime temperatures hover between 26°C and 33°C.
- Summer (April to June) - Hot and Dry: Summer in Udaipur is hot and arid, with midday temperatures soaring between 38°C and 42°C.
