Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer Airport (JSA), a civil enclave located roughly 12 km southeast of town, provides seasonal scheduled domestic flights during the winter peak (October to March) to Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Jodhpur Airport (JDH, approx. 280 km east) offers year-round national aviation links. Jaisalmer Railway Station (JSM) operates daily direct express trains linking Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur across the North Western Railway network.

Staying within the living ramparts of Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila) offers historic golden sandstone havelis within steps of medieval Jain temples and cannon bastions. The area outside the fort walls (Gadisar Road and Hanuman Circle) provides spacious heritage hotels, modern resorts, and easier vehicle parking near Gadisar Lake. Sam Sand Dunes or the quieter dunes of Khuri (approx. 40 to 45 km west) offer desert tented camps for overnight desert glamping.

Within Jaisalmer Fort and the surrounding historic haveli quarters, streets are narrow and stone-paved; walking and auto-rickshaws are the only practical choices as standard cars cannot enter the fort gates. Private taxis and four-wheel-drive vehicles (such as Mahindra 4x4 jeeps) are essential for reaching Kuldhara abandoned village, Bada Bagh cenotaphs, Sam Sand Dunes, and remote border outposts like Tanot Mata. Camel and jeep safaris operate across the sand dunes.

NH-11 serves as the primary national artery, connecting Bikaner southwest through Pokhran into Jaisalmer (approx. 330 km). From Jodhpur, travelers follow NH-125 and NH-11 westward across open Thar Desert expanses over roughly 280 km. Well-paved district and state highways extend westward from Jaisalmer to the Sam dunes and northern border desert corridors.

2 to 3 days is recommended: 1 day touring the living Sonar Qila, Jain temples, Patwon Ki Haveli, and sunset at Gadisar Lake; 1 day visiting Bada Bagh cenotaphs, the ghost village of Kuldhara, and heading to Sam Sand Dunes for an evening camel ride, folk music, and an overnight desert tent stay; and a third day for Desert National Park or a drive to the Tanot Mata shrine.
