Visakhapatnam - affectionately called Vizag - is uniquely configured among Indian coastal metropolises by the direct collision of the Eastern Ghats with the Bay of Bengal.
Visakhapatnam - affectionately called Vizag - is uniquely configured among Indian coastal metropolises by the direct collision of the Eastern Ghats with the Bay of Bengal. Within the city boundary, visitors can split their days between two contrasting coastal environments: the historic urban promenade of RK Beach with its iconic decommissioned naval museums, and the scenic northern Marine Drive leading to Blue Flag water sports at Rushikonda, ancient hilltop Buddhist monastic ruins, and the colonial Dutch waterfront of Bheemili.
For trips beyond the city limits, all featured destinations sit well within a supported 200 km one-way road radius from Visakhapatnam Junction. South and west across the fertile plains lie the archaeological caves of Bojjannakonda and the traditional country boat lotus wetlands of Kondakarla Ava (40 - 50 km). To the north and northwest, well-engineered ghat roads ascend through the Eastern Ghats into Alluri Sitharama Raju district, delivering travellers to the subterranean karstic chambers of Borra Caves (90 km), the cloud-inversion coffee viewpoints of Ananthagiri (85 km), and the temperate highland tribal valley of Araku (115 km). While lowland and mid-hill destinations are easy same-day outings, the high valleys of Araku and the chilly winter nights of Lambasingi (110 km) can be converted into relaxed overnight weekend getaways.

Planning your day
Rushikonda Beach is the only beach in the Visakhapatnam urban area recommended for swimming. It holds international Blue Flag certification, maintains full-time professional lifeguards, and has clearly marked swimming zones in a sheltered natural bay. RK Beach, Yarada Beach, and Tenneti Park have dangerous rip currents, abrupt underwater trenches, and submerged boulders where swimming is strictly prohibited.
While a rushed day trip is physically possible by leaving at 5:30 AM and driving 230 km round-trip through winding mountain ghats, it leaves insufficient time to appreciate the destinations. A single-day trip is best focused on Ananthagiri, Borra Caves, and Katiki Waterfalls (returning to Vizag by evening). If visiting Araku town (Tribal Museum, Padmapuram Gardens, and Chaparai), an overnight weekend stay in Araku is strongly recommended to avoid exhausting evening mountain driving.
The most scenic approach is to take the morning Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger or Vistadome tourist train from Visakhapatnam Junction to Borra Guhalu or Araku. The rail line traverses 58 mountain tunnels, crosses towering valley bridges, and clings to cliff edges. Travellers can explore Borra Caves upon disembarking, hire a taxi for sightseeing in Araku, and return to Visakhapatnam by road via the Ananthagiri ghat road.
The ideal period is between mid-December and mid-January. Nocturnal temperatures frequently drop below 5°C, and occasional cold waves bring temperatures down to 0°C to 2°C, causing early morning ground frost and dense fog that blankets the village until mid-morning. Travellers must carry heavy woollens and book accommodations well in advance.

The monument is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. There is currently no entry fee for Indian or international visitors. Vehicle parking in the unpaved lot at the base of the hill is generally free or incurs a nominal village fee (approx. ₹10 to ₹20). As a protected National Monument of ASI, defacing cave reliefs, writing on ancient brickwork, climbing directly onto stupas, or removing pottery fragments is strictly prohibited and punishable under central monument preservation acts. Drones require written ASI headquarters clearance.
Located near Sankaram village, roughly 3.5 km north of Anakapalle town and 42 km west of central Visakhapatnam (Dwaraka Bus Station / Railway Station). The primary driving route follows the six-lane National Highway 16 from Vizag to Anakapalle bypass, then turns onto the local paved rural road heading towards Sankaram. Travel time by private car or taxi is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. APSRTC buses run continuously from Vizag to Anakapalle RTC bus station, from where local auto-rickshaws can be hired for the short 10-minute trip to the foot of the hill.
Fees, visiting hours and entry rules may change. Confirm the latest details with the official operator or local authority before travelling.
The lake area is open during daylight hours, generally from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. A nominal panchayat/forest entry fee (approx. ₹10 to ₹20) is occasionally collected at the bund approach. Palm-log boat rides are operated privately by local fishermen; fees are negotiated directly or handled via the village cooperative, typically ranging from ₹150 to ₹400 per person depending on group size and excursion duration. Life jackets are limited on the country craft, so visitors should request buoyancy aids before setting out. Drone flights over the bird breeding zones are strictly discouraged to avoid disturbing nesting avian colonies.
Located near Kondakarla village in Atchutapuram Mandal of Anakapalli district. The road distance from central Visakhapatnam is approximately 48 to 52 km, accessed via National Highway 16 down to Anakapalle or Lankelapalem, then branching southwest onto the Atchutapuram road. Travel time by private car or taxi is roughly 1.5 hours each way. While state buses connect Vizag to Anakapalle and Atchutapuram, reaching the actual lake landing requires a local auto-rickshaw from Atchutapuram (approx. 8 km). Hiring a round-trip taxi from Visakhapatnam is by far the most practical option.

Access to the public dam viewpoint and garden is free of charge during daylight hours (typically 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily). Motorized boat rides are ticketed separately: shared boat rides cost approximately ₹50 per person (often requiring a minimum passenger quorum), while private speedboats can be chartered for approximately ₹500 to ₹700 per group. A nominal parking fee of ₹20 for two-wheelers and ₹50 for cars is collected at the entrance gate. Unauthorised swimming in the reservoir is strictly prohibited due to submerged tree trunks, deep underwater silt, and sudden drop-offs. Drone operations near the dam structure are restricted without irrigation department clearance.
Located near Thatipudi village in Gantyada Mandal of Vizianagaram district, approximately 65 km north of central Visakhapatnam (Dwaraka Bus Station / Railway Station) and about 20 km west of Vizianagaram city. From Visakhapatnam, the recommended driving route follows NH16 north to Anandapuram, branches west toward Srungavarapukota (S. Kota) along the Vizag-Araku road (SH39), and takes the well-signposted Thatipudi road. Travel time by private car or hired taxi is roughly 1.5 to 1.75 hours. Public buses run from Vizag to S. Kota, where auto-rickshaws can be engaged for the remaining 10 km drive to the dam.

Access to the roadside viewing balconies, including Galikonda Viewpoint, is free of charge and Daylight visits recommended; confirm any after-dark access. The most rewarding viewing hours are between 6:00 AM and 9:30 AM for morning cloud inversions, and 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM for golden-hour valley panoramas. Visiting commercial coffee processing factories or heritage eco-resorts (such as APTDC Haritha Hill Resort in Ananthagiri) is subject to resort guest rules. Drone photography across the valley is generally permitted for personal travel use, provided operators avoid military communication towers in the hills.

Ample paid parking is provided outside the entry complex.

There is no formal government entry ticket for Katiki Waterfalls. However, local 4x4 jeep hire costs typically range between ₹250 and ₹350 per head on a shared basis, or roughly ₹1,000 to ₹1,400 to hire an entire private jeep for a round trip (including driver waiting time). The site is open during daylight hours from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM; all visitors must start the return hike and jeep drive before dusk, as the unlit jungle road has no mobile connectivity or roadside rescue facilities. Deep swimming beneath the direct vertical cascade is hazardous due to submerged boulders and strong undertows.
Located near Katiki village, approximately 7 km from Borra Caves and 95 km from central Visakhapatnam. The journey from Visakhapatnam follows the Vizag-Araku road (SH39) up the ghat to the Borra Caves turnoff at Gatevalsa. Normal passenger cars and two-wheelers must be parked at Gatevalsa or the Borra junction, as regular civilian vehicles cannot survive the steep, boulder-strewn forest track. Local 4x4 Mahindra jeeps operate as a transport syndicate from Gatevalsa; jeeps drop passengers near the railway underpass and wait approximately 1.5 to 2 hours for the return leg.

Visiting private strawberry farms typically involves a nominal entry token of ₹20 to ₹30 per head, with freshly picked strawberries sold by weight. Thajangi reservoir is open during daylight hours without formal charges. Because the agency tracts of Alluri Sitharama Raju district are ecologically sensitive and border tribal settlements, loud music, late-night outdoor partying, and littering are strictly prohibited by local panchayats. Winter weekends attract heavy crowds, so booking accommodations weeks in advance is necessary.
