Celebrated worldwide as the "Venice of the East" - a title bestowed by Viceroy Lord Curzon in the early 20th century - Alappuzha (historically known as Alleppey) is the aquatic capital of Kerala's world-famous backwater tourism. Founded in 1762 as a planned port town and canal-based trading emporium by Raja Kesavadas, Dewan of the Kingdom of Travancore, Alappuzha presents a spellbinding landscape where waterways take the place of roads and daily life is intimately intertwined with the ebb and flow of the tide.
When planning day trips and weekend outings from Alappuzha, visitors can choose between two rewarding travel dimensions:
All out-of-town destinations lie comfortably within 14 km to 32 km from central Alappuzha, well under the 200 km ceiling, making them easily accessible for relaxed half-day or full-day excursions.

Recognized by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), Kuttanad is one of the only places on Earth where farmers cultivate crops 1.2 to 3.0 metres below sea level. Giant earthen bunds protect the polders from high-water canals, and water is continuously pumped out using electric propeller pumps.
The temple is world-famous for Ambalappuzha Palpayasam, a rich, sweet, pinkish milk pudding prepared daily as an offering to Lord Krishna. Made with fresh milk, sugar, unpolished rice, and water simmered for hours over firewood in massive brass cauldrons, it is distributed to devotees around 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM daily.
No. Pathiramanal Island is located in the middle of Vembanad Lake and is completely uninhabited and roadless. It is accessible only by water - via a 15-to-20-minute boat, shikara, or canoe ride from Muhamma Boat Jetty (16 km north of Alappuzha) or by scheduled houseboat stops.
The Alappuzha Lighthouse is open to the public daily for a narrow two-hour window: 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Visitors can climb the historic 100-step teakwood spiral staircase or ride the modern passenger elevator to the observation balcony for 360-degree ocean views.
