Celebrated as the "Royal City of Punjab", Patiala was founded in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh as the capital of the illustrious Phulkian Sikh dynasty.
Celebrated as the "Royal City of Punjab", Patiala was founded in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh as the capital of the illustrious Phulkian Sikh dynasty. Renowned across India for its flamboyant royal architecture, classical music tradition (Patiala Gharana), vibrant hand-embroidered Phulkari textiles, and handcrafted leather juttis, the city offers an exceptional tapestry of princely elegance, Sikh spirituality, and colonial botanical splendor.
For local exploration within the city, travelers can immerse themselves in the 18th-century royal citadel of Qila Mubarak with its exquisite wall frescoes in Qila Androon, admire the glittering mirror mosaics and world-renowned medal collections at Sheesh Mahal, stroll through the 19th-century Victorian conservatories of Baradari Gardens, receive blessings at the royal 1936 Kali Mata Temple, take holy dips in the healing sacred sarovar of Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, and tour the Olympic sports museum at Old Moti Bagh Palace (NIS Patiala). For excursions beyond the city limits, Patiala’s highway network offers effortless day trips to the supreme Sikh martyrdom and Mughal heritage site at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib & Sirhind, the sister princely capital at Nabha, the extensive wildlife safari at Chhatbir Zoo, the modernist wonders of Chandigarh's Rock Garden, and the birthplace of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib - all situated between 28 and 140 km.

Planning your day
Yes. Both are located within Patiala city just 3 km apart. However, note that both museums are closed on Mondays. Plan your visit from Tuesday through Sunday, starting with Qila Mubarak and the bazaar in the morning, followed by Sheesh Mahal and Old Moti Bagh in the afternoon.
The most authentic and reasonably priced Phulkari dupattas and handmade leather juttis are found in the heritage bazaars directly flanking Qila Mubarak: Adalat Bazaar, Top Khana Bazaar, and Jutti Bazaar. Look for genuine hand-embroidered silk thread (pat) on hand-spun cotton (khaddar), and inspect the hand-stitched leather soles of the juttis.
Visitors can visit the National Sports Museum located inside Old Moti Bagh Palace on working days (Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM). You must present an original government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar or Passport) at the security reception gate to obtain a visitor entry pass.
Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib is peaceful and deeply moving on any weekday throughout the year. The annual Shaheedi Jor Mela (December 26 - 28) attracts over a million pilgrims; if you wish to participate in the solemn commemoration, plan well in advance, but expect heavy traffic and security cordons.
