Shimla

Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti (SLV), located approximately 22 km southwest of the ridge, operates scheduled regional flights connecting Delhi and Chandigarh. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC, approx. 120 km southwest) provides the primary high-capacity commercial air gateway with direct flights across India. The UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla mountain railway (narrow-gauge toy train) connects Kalka (KLK) to Shimla Railway Station (SML), linking with broad-gauge express trains from New Delhi.

The Mall Road and The Ridge offer the classic central pedestrian base, with heritage colonial hotels within walking distance of Christ Church, Gaiety Theatre, and town shops. Chotta Shimla or Jakhoo Hill provides serene hillside stays surrounded by tall deodars near the Jakhoo ropeway. Mashobra and Naldehra (approx. 10 to 20 km northeast) provide pine-forested alpine retreats with golf and nature walks away from urban congestion. Kufri suits travelers seeking high-altitude snow activities and immediate proximity to the Himalayan Nature Park.

The Mall Road, The Ridge, and adjacent heritage promenades are strictly pedestrianized vehicle-free zones; visitors access The Mall from circular Cart Road via the municipal two-stage elevator (The Lift). To reach Jakhoo Temple atop the 2,455 m peak, travelers can take the aerial Jakhoo Ropeway, walk the forested path, or hire a local taxi. Auto-rickshaws do not operate in Shimla; local commuting relies on registered union taxis and HRTC minibuses. Private cabs are required for visiting the Viceregal Lodge (Summer Hill), Chadwick Falls, and Kufri.

NH-5 (Hindustan-Tibet Road) serves as the primary four-lane mountain corridor from Chandigarh and Kalka, ascending through Parwanoo, Dharampur, Solan, and Kandaghat into Shimla (approx. 115 km from Chandigarh). The modernized Solan-Parwanoo bypass has reduced driving times significantly, though monsoon rains can cause rockfalls. Beyond Shimla, NH-5 continues east past Kufri, Theog, and Narkanda into Kinnaur.

2 to 3 days provides an optimal itinerary: 1 day exploring the pedestrian Mall Road, The Ridge, Christ Church, and taking the ropeway to Jakhoo Temple; 1 day touring the colonial Viceregal Lodge (IIAS) at Summer Hill and Chadwick Falls; and a third day for an alpine excursion to Kufri and the deodar forests of Mashobra or Naldehra.
