Manali Kullu

Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar (KUU), located roughly 50 km south of Manali along the Beas River, operates regional turboprop flights connecting Delhi, Chandigarh, and Amritsar. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC, approx. 290 km south) serves as the primary high-capacity commercial aviation hub, offering direct national flights and continuous Volvo coach services. Chandigarh (CDG) and Ambala Cantt (UMB) provide the nearest major broad-gauge railheads.

Old Manali, nestled among apple orchards across the Manalsu river, offers bohemian guesthouses, riverside cafes, and walking access to Hadimba Temple and Manu Temple. Central Manali (Mall Road and Model Town) provides commercial hotels, shopping convenience, and immediate access to private and HRTC bus stands. Solang Valley and Palchan provide alpine resort bases situated closer to ski slopes and the Atal Tunnel, avoiding town traffic jams.

Auto-rickshaws suit short trips around Manali, Old Manali and Vashisht. Local sightseeing taxis serve Solang Valley and excursions toward Sissu. Rohtang Pass trips require the applicable vehicle permit and depend on seasonal opening and current restrictions. The Atal Tunnel provides a lower road connection toward Lahaul, but snow, road conditions and traffic controls can still interrupt access; it does not guarantee that onward mountain routes are open.

NH-21 / NH-3 serves as the primary lifeline, running north from Chandigarh through Kiratpur, Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi, and the Pandoh-Aut gorge into Kullu and Manali (approx. 290 km). The upgraded highway corridor and modern bypass tunnels have substantially streamlined driving times, although the monsoon season brings frequent landslide disruptions along the riverbank sections.

3 to 4 days provides a well-rounded holiday: 1 day for Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, and Vashisht hot sulfur springs; 1 day for Solang Valley and driving through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu waterfall; and 1 to 2 days for ascending Rohtang Pass (with required permit) and touring the ancient wooden architecture of Naggar Castle.
