The story of Rambha
Nestled at the southernmost curve of Chilika Lake in coastal Odisha's Ganjam district, Rambha is widely celebrated as the most visually captivating and serene gateway to Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. While the northern sector at Mangalajodi is dominated by flat freshwater marshes and the central sector at Barkul bustles with water sports, Rambha presents a dramatic seascape where the rugged, forested granite ridges of the Eastern Ghats plunge directly into deep, crystalline saline waters, creating an enchanting archipelago of conical green islets, rocky crags, and tranquil secluded bays.
Steeped in 18th-century colonial lore and aristocratic Odishan history, Rambha became the favorite winter sanctuary of Thomas Snodgrass, the eccentric British East India Company Collector of Ganjam (1791 - 1797). Captivated by the beauty of the southern bay, Snodgrass constructed a magnificent waterfront mansion and sailed daily across the lagoon to conduct his administrative affairs and dine on picturesque islets - most famously Breakfast Island (Sankuda Island) and Beacon Island, where his historic stone cottage and navigation obelisk still stand today.
Beyond its romantic colonial ruins, Rambha is a biodiversity haven of global scientific significance. Its forested rocky islands shelter wild spotted deer, while Honeymoon Island (Barkuda) is the exclusive type locality of the critically endangered, endemic limbless lizard (Barkudia insularis). With the flagship OTDC Panthanivas Rambha offering panoramic lakeside cottages, manicured garden lawns, and an on-site boat jetty, Rambha provides travelers with the ultimate peaceful retreat for island-hopping, sunset photography, and contemplative exploration along the South Coast of Odisha.

The primary air gateway to Rambha is Biju Patnaik International Airport (BBI) in Bhubaneswar, located approximately 130 kilometres north. Bhubaneswar operates frequent daily non-stop flights connecting all premier Indian cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. From the airport terminal, pre-paid tourist taxis and app-based cabs take approximately 2.5 hours to reach Rambha via the 6-lane National Highway 16 (NH-16).
Boat Selection and Safety
Choose your vessel based on your travel party. Sleek speedboats are thrilling and cover long distances to Somolo and Honeymoon Island quickly, but can experience salt spray. Traditional covered motorized launches travel more slowly (10 to 12 knots), providing shaded comfort and stable platforms ideal for elderly travelers, families with young children, and photographers using heavy lenses. Always ensure lifejackets are securely fastened before the boat leaves the jetty.

What to expect

The Geographic Character of the Southern Sector
Rambha Bay represents the deepest and most saline ecological zone of Chilika Lake. Unlike the muddy shallows of the northern sector, the water here is deep, remarkably clear, and bordered by steep rocky shorelines. The bay is framed by iconic geographical landmarks: the bell-shaped Ghantasila Hill to the north, the forested mass of Somolo Island to the east, and the mainland Ghat ridges to the west.
Because the bay is protected from open oceanic swells by surrounding landforms, its waters remain mirror-flat throughout the winter months, offering exceptionally smooth, comfortable cruising conditions even for travelers prone to motion sickness.

The Eccentric Tale of Thomas Snodgrass & Breakfast Island
The human history of Rambha is inextricably linked with Thomas Snodgrass, who arrived as the East India Company Collector of Ganjam in 1791. Enchanted by the serene beauty of the lagoon, Snodgrass abandoned his formal administrative office in Ganjam town and built an opulent summer mansion on the shores of Rambha.
To escape the heat and interruptions of mainland callers, Snodgrass partnered with the Raja of Khallikote to erect a charming two-room masonry cottage and a tapering stone beacon on a tiny, isolated rocky outcrop in the bay, which quickly became known as Breakfast Island (or Sankuda Island in Odia). Every morning, a flotilla of rowing boats would ferry Snodgrass and his staff across the bay. Snodgrass would enjoy a lavish breakfast on the island terrace while watching passing merchant sailing boats, conducting revenue business surrounded by the cool morning breezes of Chilika.
When the East India Company Board of Directors in Calcutta grew suspicious of his accounting books and dispatched an auditing commission to inspect the Ganjam treasury records, Snodgrass staged a theatrical disaster. He loaded all his financial ledgers onto a country boat and deliberately capsized it in deep water near Breakfast Island, claiming that an unexpected squall had destroyed every record. Today, the whitewashed ruins of Snodgrass's two-room cottage stand proudly amidst wild coastal shrubs and bougainvillea on Breakfast Island, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into early colonial coastal life.
The Islands of Rambha Bay
A standard boat safari from the Rambha OTDC jetty explores a captivating sequence of diverse islands:
- Beacon Island: A striking, steep-sided conical rock islet jutting dramatically out of deep water. Perched on its summit is an architectural stone pillar (an obelisk) built by Snodgrass around 1795 to guide sailing ships entering Rambha Bay from the open lagoon.
- Honeymoon Island (Barkuda Island): Situated about 5 kilometres from the jetty, this tear-shaped island features lush green Casuarina stands, red laterite soils, and clear pebbled beaches. It is renowned in natural history as the habitat where Dr. Nelson Annandale of the Zoological Survey of India discovered the Barkudia limbless skink (Barkudia insularis) in 1917.
- Bird Island (Chadeihaga Island): A massive, rugged jumble of giant granite boulders rising vertically from the water. Because thousands of roosting aquatic birds have used these crags for centuries, the entire rock face is stained a brilliant chalky white with natural guano. Boats circle the island to observe dense roosts of little cormorants, Indian cormorants, grey herons, intermediate egrets, and soaring white-bellied sea eagles.
- Somolo and Dumkudi Islands: Located further out in the bay, these are much larger, heavily wooded rocky islands rising to steep laterite ridges. They are inhabited by small populations of wild spotted deer, monkeys, and dry-zone bird species.
- Ghantasila Hill: Rising at the northern mouth of Rambha Bay, this bell-shaped hillock is covered in dense forest. Ancient inscriptions carved into its stone faces reflect the site's role as a lookout point, and trekking paths lead to a scenic summit overlooking the entire lagoon.
