Spiti Valley

Spiti has no operational airport due to its high altitude; Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar (KUU, approx. 250 km west via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass) serves as the closest seasonal flight link in summer. Chandigarh International Airport (IXC) and Chandigarh Railway Station (CDG, approx. 450 to 500 km south) provide the primary year-round commercial flight and broad-gauge rail gateways via the gradual Kinnaur approach.

Kaza (3,650 m) is the primary administrative and commercial center, offering hotels, homestays, fuel stations, and central access to Key Monastery, Kibber, and the high-altitude fossil villages of Langza, Hikkim, and Komic. Tabo (3,280 m) in lower Spiti is ideal for exploring the 10th-century mud-brick monastery complex and serves as a lower-elevation acclimatization base when entering from Kinnaur. Mudh village provides rustic homestays at the entrance to Pin Valley National Park. Chandratal and Batal offer seasonal wilderness tented camps near the high-altitude glacial lake.

High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles or sturdy SUVs with experienced mountain drivers are strongly recommended; standard sedans and small hatchbacks risk severe undercarriage damage on rocky tracks and torrential glacial meltwater streams (pagal nallahs) between Gramphu, Batal, and Kunzum Pass. HRTC operates limited daily buses linking Kaza with Shimla and Manali during peak summer months. Foreign nationals must obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) when traveling through the Kinnaur-Spiti border corridor between Reckong Peo and Sumdo.

Spiti has two contrasting approaches: the seasonal route from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, Gramphu, Batal and Kunzum Pass, and the longer Shimla-Kinnaur approach via Rampur, Reckong Peo, Nako and Sumdo. The Kunzum route usually becomes usable in summer but its opening varies with snow and road conditions. The Kinnaur approach avoids Kunzum and supports a more gradual ascent, but can also suffer snow, rockfall and landslide closures. A circuit entering through Kinnaur and leaving toward Manali is an itinerary option only when both corridors are open; allow extra days rather than assuming uninterrupted passage.

5 to 7 days is necessary for a safe, comprehensive circuit: 2 days for gradual altitude acclimatization along the Kinnaur route; 2 to 3 days based in Kaza exploring Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim, and Pin Valley; and 1 to 2 days for camping near Chandratal and crossing Kunzum Pass into Manali.
