Dharamshala McLeodganj

Kangra Airport at Gaggal (DHM), located roughly 14 km southwest of Dharamshala and 20 km from McLeod Ganj, operates daily scheduled commercial flights to Delhi and Chandigarh. Pathankot Railway Station (PTK) and Pathankot Cantt (PTKC) in Punjab, situated approximately 85 km southwest, serve as the primary broad-gauge mainline railhead with regular express services nationwide. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley toy train runs from Pathankot to Kangra (KGRA, 18 km).

McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamshala) is the spiritual and cultural heart of the Tibetan diaspora, putting visitors within walking distance of the Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple), monasteries, and vibrant cafe streets. Dharamkot and Bhagsu, positioned higher on the forested slopes, cater to trekkers and backpackers with quiet guesthouses, meditation centers, and immediate access to the Triund trail. Lower Dharamshala offers lower elevation, commercial services, and proximity to the HPCA Cricket Stadium. Sidhpur in the valley provides serene stays near the Japanese-inspired gardens of Norbulingka Institute.

The modern Dharamshala Skyway aerial ropeway connects Lower Dharamshala directly to McLeod Ganj in under 10 minutes, bypassing the congested, steep uphill road. Within McLeod Ganj, narrow one-way lanes (Temple Road and Jogiwara Road) are largely pedestrian; walking and auto-rickshaws handle town trips. Registered union taxis are required for visiting Naddi sunset point, Norbulingka, and Kangra Fort. The popular Triund trek starts above Dharamkot at Gallu Devi Temple; local forest checkpoints enforce plastic bans, and overnight camping requires advance permits.

NH-503 connects Pathankot eastward across the plains and low hills into Kangra and Dharamshala (approx. 90 km). From Chandigarh, follow NH-205 through Kiratpur, Anandpur Sahib, and Una, continuing along NH-503 through Amb and Kangra into Dharamshala (approx. 245 km). Road approaches climb steadily from the lush Kangra Valley into the steep sub-Himalayan contours of Upper Dharamshala.

3 to 4 days allows a rewarding circuit: 1 day exploring the Tsuglagkhang Complex, Tibet Museum, and McLeod Ganj cafes; 1 day hiking to the panoramic alpine meadow of Triund; 1 day touring St. John in the Wilderness Church, Bhagsu waterfall, and Naddi sunset viewpoint; and 1 day visiting Norbulingka Institute and ancient Kangra Fort.
