Hampi Badami

Jindal Vijaynagar Airport at Toranagallu (VDY), located roughly 38 km east of Hampi, provides regional scheduled flights from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Hubballi Airport (HBX), situated 150 km west of Hampi and 105 km west of Badami, handles extensive domestic airline connections across major Indian metros. Hosapete Junction (HPT), 12 km from Hampi, is the primary railhead with direct express trains like the Hampi Express from Bengaluru; Badami Railway Station (BDM) handles regional rail transit.

Kamalapur, situated on Hampi's southern perimeter, offers premium heritage resorts, government KSTDC hotels, and immediate access to the Royal Centre and the archaeological museum. Hampi Bazaar village near Virupaksha Temple caters to independent travelers seeking walking proximity to the sacred river ghats and Matanga Hill. Hosapete provides convenient commercial hotels near the rail terminus. Badami town offers comfortable heritage bases near Agastya Lake for exploring the rock-cut cave temples and day-tripping to Pattadakal and Aihole.

Within Hampi's sprawling 4,100-hectare ruins, rented bicycles, motorized scooters, and hired auto-rickshaws provide the most flexible way to navigate between distant temple complexes. Eco-friendly battery-operated buggies shuttle visitors between the main parking area and the Vittala Temple Stone Chariot. Across the Tungabhadra River, traditional circular coracle boats carry passengers to Anegundi. For the Badami-Pattadakal-Aihole circuit (35 km loop), private cabs and NWKRTC state buses provide easy transit.

From Bengaluru, NH-48 runs north to Chitradurga, where NH-50 connects seamlessly to Hosapete and Hampi (approx. 340 km, 6 hours on excellent 4-lane expressway). To link Hampi with Badami, take NH-50 north toward Kushtagi and Ilkal, then branch west on SH-14 to Badami (approx. 135 km, 3 hours). From Goa, NH-748 and NH-67 run eastward via Hubballi and Gadag directly into the heritage corridor.

4 to 5 days is recommended for a fulfilling historical journey: spend 2 to 3 days in Hampi exploring the Sacred Centre (Virupaksha, Hemakuta, Achyutaraya, and Vittala Temple) and the Royal Centre (Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables); then dedicate 1 to 2 days in Badami touring the four cliffside cave temples, Agastya Lake, and the ancient Chalukyan temple complexes of Pattadakal and Aihole.
