Auli Valley of Flowers

Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located approximately 270 km southwest via Rishikesh, is the nearest commercial airport with daily domestic connections. Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) and Haridwar Junction (HW, 290 km) serve as the primary rail gateways on the northern plains, where morning taxis and mountain buses commence the high-altitude road journey up the Alaknanda Valley.

Joshimath (elev. 1,875 m) is the central year-round staging post, offering hotels, gear rentals, banks, and the base terminal for the Auli ropeway. Auli (elev. 2,800 to 3,050 m) provides alpine ski lodges, GMVN resort rooms, and meadow chalets facing Nanda Devi. For the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib, travelers drive to Govindghat and trek up to Ghangaria (Govinddham, elev. 3,050 m), the mandatory staging hamlet where all hikers must stay, as overnight camping inside the national park is strictly banned.

Mountain buses and shared or private taxis connect the Rishikesh-Joshimath-Govindghat corridor. Plan the Joshimath-Auli connection by road; use the ropeway only if its operator confirms it is running for your dates. For Valley of Flowers, travel onward from Govindghat toward the Poolna roadhead and trek to Ghangaria, which is the base for separate Valley of Flowers and Hemkund outings. The Valley of Flowers walking route and Hemkund ascent have different access rules; use authorised assistance only where permitted and allow for seasonal closures.

NH-7 forms the primary Himalayan lifeline, tracing the Alaknanda River upstream from Rishikesh past Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag to Joshimath and Govindghat (approx. 275 km, roughly 9 to 11 hours). Plan to drive in daylight because of dramatic canyon terrain and periodic monsoon rockfalls along the Char Dham highway corridor.

5 to 6 days is essential to account for transit and safe altitude acclimatization: 2 full days for the winding mountain drives to and from Rishikesh; 1 day in Auli riding the chairlift to Gorson Bugyal; and 2 to 3 days based in Ghangaria for exploring the Valley of Flowers floral sanctuary and trekking to the high glacial tarn of Hemkund Sahib (4,329 m).
