Deep Kumaon

Kathgodam Railway Station (KGM) is the premier rail gateway for the Kumaon interior, situated roughly 90 km south of Almora and 70 km south of Mukteshwar, offering daily direct express services from Delhi including the Kathgodam Shatabdi and Ranikhet Express. Pantnagar Airport (PGH, 125 km from Almora) handles regional domestic flights, while Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL, approx. 360-400 km) provides primary long-distance connections.

Almora and Kasar Devi ridge (elev. 1,650 to 1,900 m) offer bohemian guesthouses and pine-forested homestays along Crank's Ridge, providing easy road access to Chitai Golu Devta and the deodar-enshrouded stone temples of Jageshwar Dham. Mukteshwar (2,170 m) features boutique orchard estates and cliff-edge lodges facing the Nanda Devi range. Further northeast, Chaukori (2,010 m) provides quiet lodges amidst historic tea gardens, while Munsiyari (2,200 m) in Pithoragarh district acts as the rugged frontier basecamp staring directly into the five snow-capped peaks of Panchachuli.

Travel across Deep Kumaon relies on mountain-grade private taxis or shared Mahindra Bolero/Maxx jeeps operated by KMOU unions connecting transit nodes at Almora, Bageshwar, Berinag, Thal, and Munsiyari. Distances between ridges are deceptive; the scenic drive from Almora to Munsiyari spans roughly 200 km but takes 7 to 9 hours via Birthi Falls and Kalamuni Pass (2,750 m). Within Kasar Devi and Mukteshwar, footpaths, village tracks, and rented two-wheelers are ideal for local exploration.

From Delhi, follow NH-9 through Moradabad and Rampur to Rudrapur, then NH-109 through Haldwani, Kathgodam, and Bhowali to Almora (approx. 360 km, 8 to 9 hours). For Mukteshwar, fork east at Bhowali through Ramgarh's fruit belt. Reaching Munsiyari requires following NH-309A from Almora through Bageshwar and Chaukori, continuing on state mountain roads via Thal and over high Kalamuni Pass.

5 to 7 days is recommended to comfortably traverse the long mountain distances: 2 days split between Mukteshwar and Kasar Devi/Almora visiting Jageshwar Dham; 1 day relaxing in the tea gardens of Chaukori; and 2 to 3 days in Munsiyari for views of Panchachuli, the Birthi Falls trail, and the Khaliya Top ridge trek.
