Char Dham Badrinath

Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located approximately 315 km southwest via Rishikesh, is the nearest commercial airport with daily scheduled flights from major Indian metros. Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) and Haridwar Junction (HW, approx. 320-330 km) serve as the primary rail termini and vehicle departure points on the northern plains, where long-distance mountain buses and private taxis commence the high-altitude journey up the Alaknanda gorge.

Badrinath Puri settlement (elev. 3,133 m) sits directly beside the sacred temple along the Alaknanda River, offering GMVN tourist bungalows, ashrams, and private hotels within walking distance of Tapt Kund thermal springs. Mana Village (3,200 m, 3 km north), designated as 'India's First Village', offers rustic Bhotia tribal homestays near Vyas Gufa. Lower down, Pandukeshwar and Govindghat (1,828 m) provide milder-altitude valley lodges, while Joshimath (1,875 m, 45 km south) offers full commercial amenities and serves as the winter seat of Lord Badrinath.

Unlike Kedarnath, Badrinath is directly accessible by motor vehicles, with public buses, taxis, and private cars driving straight to the Badrinath town parking lot. Within Badrinath, pedestrian footbridges spanning the Alaknanda connect hotels to the temple complex and Tapt Kund. Shared taxis and private cabs run the short 3 km link between Badrinath and Mana Village. Beyond Mana, the 5 km scenic trail to the thundering 122-meter Vasudhara Falls is strictly traversed on foot.

NH-7 forms the primary Himalayan lifeline, tracking the Alaknanda River upstream from Rishikesh past Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Chamoli, and Joshimath directly to Badrinath and Mana (approx. 295 km, 10 to 12 hours). Mountain Plan to drive in daylight because of high-altitude canyon switchbacks, seasonal rockfall zones, and strict police border checkposts.

3 to 4 days allows a relaxed, reverent pilgrimage: 1 day driving from Rishikesh up to Joshimath or Pandukeshwar for initial acclimatization; 1 day driving to Badrinath, taking a dip in the natural thermal waters of Tapt Kund, attending the magnificent evening aarti at Badrinath Temple, and staying overnight; 1 day exploring the mythological caves of Vyas Gufa and Bhim Pul in Mana Village and trekking to Vasudhara Falls; and 1 day driving back down to Rishikesh.
