Char Dham Kedarnath

Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located approximately 235 km southwest via Rishikesh, is the nearest commercial airport with daily domestic flights from major Indian metros. Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) and Haridwar Junction (HW, approx. 240-250 km) serve as the primary rail termini and vehicle rallying points on the northern plains, from where pilgrim buses and mountain taxis commence the ascent into the Mandakini Valley.

Kedarnath settlement (elev. 3,584 m), situated directly behind the temple in the high glacial cirque, offers GMVN prefabricated cottages, ashram dharamsalas, and government tent colonies for overnight stays. Gaurikund (1,980 m) acts as the motorable roadhead with natural thermal springs and pilgrim lodges at the foot of the trek. Sonprayag (1,820 m) provides the primary vehicle parking terminus and shuttle taxi junction. Lower down, Guptkashi, Phata, and Sersi offer full-service valley hotels and helicopter launchpads.

Sonprayag is the main parking and transfer point for the approach to Gaurikund, where the mountain trek to Kedarnath begins. Follow the local shuttle and traffic arrangements in force during your visit. The uphill trek is a substantial high-altitude journey; walking, authorised pony services and porter-carried assistance have different practical demands. Seasonal helicopter services from the valley depend on weather, operating permissions and ticket availability. Use the official IRCTC HeliYatra booking channel when services are offered, and leave a fallback plan if a flight cannot operate.

From Rishikesh, travel north on NH-7 through Devprayag and Srinagar to Rudraprayag (140 km), then branch north onto NH-107 following the Mandakini River through Agastyamuni, Kund, Guptkashi, and Phata to Sonprayag (total 215 km, 8 to 10 hours). Plan travel in daylight because of steep canyon drop-offs and dynamic mountain weather along the Char Dham all-weather highway corridor.

Allow at least 3 to 4 days from the Rishikesh or Haridwar area for road transfers, the ascent, an overnight stay if arranged, and the return. Extra time is sensible for acclimatisation, weather delays and personal fitness. This is a suggested itinerary range, not a guarantee that the trek or helicopter journey will fit a fixed schedule.
