Char Dham Chopta

Dehradun's Jolly Grant Airport (DED), located approximately 210 to 230 km southwest via Rishikesh and Devprayag, is the nearest commercial aviation facility with daily domestic flights from major Indian metros. Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) and Haridwar Junction (HW, approx. 230-250 km) serve as the primary railheads and vehicle rallying centers on the plains, where pilgrimage buses and mountain taxis depart for high Garhwal.

Chopta (elev. 2,680 m) offers eco-camps, dome tents, and rustic lodges set amidst alpine meadows, serving as the direct trailhead for Tungnath and Chandrashila. Sari village (elev. 2,000 m) provides welcoming homestays and acts as the walking base for pristine Deoria Tal lake. Ukhimath (1,310 m), the winter home of Lord Kedarnath, provides year-round valley hotels and market amenities, while Guptkashi and Sonprayag stage travelers venturing into the Mandakini gorge toward Kedarnath.

Shared Mahindra Maxx/Bolero jeeps and local GMOU buses ply the connecting ridge roads between Rudraprayag, Ukhimath, Chopta, Mandal, and Gopeshwar. Reaching Tungnath Temple (elev. 3,680 m) requires a 3.5 km stone-paved uphill trek from Chopta, navigable on foot or via hired ponies and mules. The final 1.5 km scramble from Tungnath to Chandrashila summit (4,000 m) is strictly pedestrian across exposed rocky ridgelines. Seasonal helicopter shuttles operate to Kedarnath from nearby Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi.

From Rishikesh, travel north on NH-7 through Devprayag and Srinagar to Rudraprayag (140 km), where the route splits onto NH-107 along the Mandakini River toward Kund. At Kund, take the winding mountain link road climbing through Ukhimath and dense oak-rhododendron reserves to Chopta pass (approx. 210 km total from Rishikesh, 7 to 9 hours). The road continues past Chopta toward Mandal and Chamoli, creating a vital traverse connecting the Mandakini and Alaknanda valleys.

4 to 5 days allows a rewarding high-mountain journey: 1 day to drive up from Rishikesh and hike to serene Deoria Tal; 1 to 2 days based in Chopta to summit Tungnath and Chandrashila at sunrise and explore alpine meadows; and 1 to 2 days to connect with nearby Char Dham pilgrimage valleys in Guptkashi or Joshimath before descending.
